Auto Reframe: Convert Horizontal Video to Vertical in Seconds

Select your 16:9 clip, go to Effects panel, search Auto Reframe, apply it. Choose target aspect ratio (9:16 for vertical). Premiere uses AI to track the subject and automatically reframe every shot, keeping the action centered.

Shooting in 16:9 but need 9:16 for Instagram Reels or TikTok? Auto Reframe uses AI motion tracking to intelligently reframe horizontal footage for vertical platforms — no manual keyframing required.

Quick Method: Effect on Individual Clips

  1. Select your clip in the timeline
  2. In Effects panel, search Auto Reframe
  3. Apply to the clip
  4. In Effect Controls, set Target Aspect Ratio to 9:16 (vertical)
  5. Choose motion preset: Slower Motion (interviews), Default, or Faster Motion (action/sports)

Batch Method: Entire Sequence

  1. Go to Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence
  2. Choose target aspect ratio
  3. Premiere creates a new sequence with all clips reframed
  4. Review and adjust any shots where the AI missed the mark

When AI Gets It Wrong

Auto Reframe tracks the most prominent subject, which means it occasionally follows the wrong element in busy frames. Override it by adding manual position keyframes in Effect Controls on specific clips. The AI-generated keyframes are fully editable.

Production Tip

When we shoot knowing the content needs both horizontal and vertical delivery, we frame subjects in the center third of the 16:9 frame. This gives Auto Reframe maximum flexibility and produces clean vertical crops with minimal manual adjustment.
