Mix Audio Like a Pro Using Essential Sound Panel

Open the Essential Sound panel (Window > Essential Sound), tag each clip as Dialogue, Music, SFX, or Ambience. Premiere automatically applies EQ, compression, and ducking based on the tag. Use Auto Match to level dialogue across clips.

Bad audio kills good video. Premiere Pro's Essential Sound panel makes professional audio mixing accessible even if you're not a sound engineer.

The Tagging System

  1. Select an audio clip in your timeline
  2. Open Essential Sound panel and tag it: Dialogue, Music, SFX, or Ambience
  3. Each tag unlocks specific processing tools optimized for that content type

Key Features by Tag

Dialogue: Loudness Auto Match levels all dialogue to a consistent volume. Repair tools remove background noise, hum, and rumble. Clarity presets (Podcast Voice, Natural, etc.) add appropriate EQ.

Music: Ducking automatically lowers music volume when dialogue is detected. Set duck amount, sensitivity, and fade speed for smooth transitions.

SFX/Ambience: Adjust loudness and apply reverb or spatial effects to place sounds in the mix.

Target Loudness

Set your loudness target based on delivery platform: -14 LUFS for YouTube/social media, -24 LUFS for broadcast TV, -16 LUFS for podcasts. The Essential Sound panel displays real-time loudness metering so you can hit these targets consistently.
